Social media is a necessity in any newsroom but there’s not always the budget for the newest and shiniest tools to harness social media effectively. Angela Kim, head of Audience Development at Yahoo! Entertainment, will share different free and low cost social media tools tools that can be used in the implementation of reporting strategies and audience engagement. Attendees should have a basic understanding of platforms like Facebook and Twitter.

Today’s documentary filmmaker has many options in terms of distribution. Instead of going with a traditional distributor, today filmmakers have the option of streaming video-on-demand (SVOD) platforms like Amazon, Netflix, YouTube Premium and Facebook Watch.
These four platforms not only have global audiences worldwide, but also provide funding in new ways for documentary filmmaking.
But how do you get on these platforms? Justin R. Ching of j-school will share his insider knowledge from his successful sale of the Amazon Exclusive Series ‘Ritual’.

Justin R. Ching is a showrunner who has produced hit series for Amazon, FOX and YouTube. Currently the Supervising Producer on Amazon’s Ritual, Ching began his career with YouTube Originals, launching channels like VICE, AwesomenessTV and Tastemade. He led the FOX/Facebook partnership to produce the docu-series “Z Dream” starring Sung Kang from The Fast & The Furious series. Recently, he was featured in Forbes and recognized by AAJA for Asian Pacific Heritage Month. This is your chance to see what it takes to code your way into journalism. Join AAJA-LA for a hands-on workshop that will introduce you to the Python programming language. We’ll cover basic programming concepts, examples of how you’d use this in your newsroom, and useful resources to continue learning. Introduction to 360 Video
Learn about virtual reality as it applies to non-fiction storytelling and journalism, ranging from content creation to content consumption. Instructor Robert Hernandez will will explore the quickly changing landscape of this emerging technology, reviewing current VR Journalism experiences available.
The two hour class will cover:
-The different head-mounted displays (HMDs) available -The different cameras available to produce live-action, 360 video -The different software available to produce experiences -What VR content creators face when working on productions -Techniques and tips for 360 productions
Speaker:
ROBERT HERNANDEZ, aka WebJournalist, has made a name for himself as a journalist of the Web, not just on the Web. His primary focus is exploring and developing the intersection of technology and journalism – to empower people, inform reporting and storytelling, engage community, improve distribution and, whenever possible, enhance revenue. He is an Associate Professor of Professional Practice at USC Annenberg, but he’s not an academic… he’s more of a “hackademic” that specializes in “MacGyvering” digital journalism through emerging technologies. His most recent work includes Augmented Reality, Wearables/Google Glass and Virtual Reality — he and his students produce VR experiences under their brand: JOVRNALISM. Their work can be seen in The New York Times, NPR, ProPublica and in their own iOS/Android app. Hernandez is also the co-founder of #wjchat and co-creator of the Diversify Journalism Project. He has served on boards that have included Chicas Poderosas, InquireFirst and the Online News Association. He is a Journalism 360 ambassador and a lifetime member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists. He connects dots and people.

Community reporting has added value to mainstream news coverage by bringing local stories to a wider audience, helping media to reflect a greater diversity of voices and inspire more people to change their communities for the better.
Speaker:
GEORGE KO is CEO and co-founder of Giant Robot Media, an Asian American Pop Culture media company based in Los Angeles. Along with original Giant Robot Magazine founder Eric Nakamura, George has been bringing a fresh perspective in media and continues to grow the media company alongside the Giant Robot brand. George also serves as the Creative Director at a new robotics company and is organizing its national campaign.
George has founded several startups, including Politoscape, a political news startup that received the Gov 2.0 award of Innovation at Harvard University and was featured in the Huffington Post. George is also President Emeritus of the Harvard College Piano Society and founder of the Pianos for Harvard Project, a $2.1 million fund to replace over 76 pianos at Harvard.
A classically trained pianist George is also an active philanthropist, having helped build two All-Steinway Schools and also provided fundraising and consulting services to numerous arts organizations. George is also an active public speaker, having given lectures at MIT, Harvard, and the Tanglewood Institute of Music.

AMY DEPAUL is an award-winning writer whose articles have appeared on numerous websites and in major metropolitan newspapers, including the Washington Post and others. Many of her stories unfold in the county’s growing immigrant communities, including Santa Ana, such as this series revealing that city’s high rate of domestic violence or coverage of trauma in Vietnamese-American communities.
THY ANH VO is a reporter for the Voice of OC covering the cities of Anaheim, Garden Grove, and Westminster as well as transportation issues and the courts. She has investigated nepotism and illegal contracts in the city of Garden Grove, an illegal pension arrangement by the Westminster city attorney and controversy over the use of publicly-funded mass mailers by county supervisors.
NICK GERDA is a reporter for the Voice of OC who has regularly shed light on topics that are often kept in the shadows. Nick covers the city of Santa Ana, as well as the County of Orange, often reporting on issues like homelessness, public safety, mental health, and the role of money in politics.
MARIKO LOCHRIDGE is a former breaking news journalist covering international news for Reuters, AK+ and Japanese national broadcaster Nippon Television. She has since moved into community organizing and works with the Japanese American small business community around Los Angeles county. She still contributes as a freelance journalist to Reuters, NBC Asian America and A Beautiful Perspective on pop culture and innovations in science and technology.
This event will be moderating by ADITI MAYER, founder and editor-in-chief of InSight Magazine.

The fourth workshop in the V3 Series will be led by Amara Aguilar of USC Annenberg. She will be reviewing Google Tools for journalists including but not limited to Google Maps and Fusion Tables. A limited number of attendees will have the opportunity to submit stories they are working on for feedback on how to use Google Tools to improve their reporting skills.
Amara Aguilar develops and teaches journalism for mobile and emerging platforms, and interactive media design for publishing, among other courses. She also teaches digital journalism in the graduate program.
Previously Amara was a multimedia assistant professor at Pierce College in Los Angeles, where she taught multimedia storytelling, video journalism, podcasting, online journalism, media design and development, and explored journalism on mobile and emerging platforms. There she launched a student-run internet radio station, KPCRadio.com, and developed curriculum for a new mobile application design program.
Amara is a member of the Society of Newspaper Design, Online News Association, National Association of Hispanic Journalists, AEJMC and Society of Professional Journalists.
She has done media consulting and training for various professional national and local media organizations, universities, colleges and high schools. Amara has also taught internationally, spending several summers in Spain teaching multimedia and social media journalism. She has conducted various workshops and training on social media, audience engagement, mobile journalism, video journalism, podcasting, digital storytelling, app design, emerging platforms and much more.

The third workshop in the V3 Series will be led by James Kim of KPCC. He will talk about the narrative arc of a podcast for news as well as how KPCC chooses which independent podcasters to feature in their programming.
James Kim is an associate producer for KPCC’s podcast division. He’s worked on other podcasts including Radiotopia’s “Strangers” and the audio fiction show “Deadly Manners” starring Kristen Bell and LeVar Burton. James has also created his own podcasts including “There’s Something Out There” for Marfa Public Radio, “The Hiss,” and “The Competition.” He previously worked as a producer for “The Dinner Party Download,” “Marketplace,” and KPCC’s “The Frame.”

The second workshop in the V3 Series will be led by Kim Bui of NowThisNews. She will talk about how their newsroom uses Twitter to share breaking news updates as well as how journalists can verify sources found on social media.
P. Kim Bui is the editor-at-large for NowThis News, focusing on original, social reporting and breaking news. Prior to NowThis, she was deputy managing editor for reported.ly, a digital media startup specializing in social journalism. Her career has focused on leading breaking news initiatives and working on new storytelling forms for digital, print and broadcast companies catering to local, national and global audiences. She’s run training and taught classes on digital and social journalism at universities, conferences and gatherings worldwide. She’s also co-founder of the now retired #wjchat, one of the longest running weekly Twitter chats for journalists.

Annie Yu
Annie Z. Yu is a producer for the audience engagement team. Before joining the Los Angeles Times, she managed social media as an engagement fellow at ProPublica in New York City. Prior to that, she reported for the Arizona Republic, the Orange County Register and several other news organizations in Washington, D.C. She hails from the Bay Area and graduated from Azusa Pacific University, where she served as an award-winning editor-in-chief of the newspaper.
Steve Saldivar
Steve Saldivar is interested in arts, culture and ideas. He served as the Getty’s first social media coordinator. Previously he was a producer for Frontline/WORLD. Saldivar received his B.A. in English from UC Berkeley. He thought he was going to live in Walden Pond like his favorite author. Instead, he stayed and graduated from the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism, where he fell in love with all the ways to tell a story. Originally from East Los Angeles, he can still be seen walking down Whittier Boulevard eating shrimp burritos from Tacos Baja.
