Actor Lucy Liu introduces ‘Rosemead’ screening, conversation on AAPI mental health issues

The Asian American Journalists Association – Los Angeles hosted a free screening of “Rosemead” on Thursday, Nov. 13 at the AMC in Century City, which was followed by a conversation on the APPI mental health issues raised in the film.

Actor Lucy Liu, who plays Irene in “Rosemead,” introduced the film that took seven years to bring to the big screen. The movie is set in San Gabriel Valley and tells the story of a terminally ill Chinese immigrant mother, played by Liu, who discovers her son’s dark impulses and is confronted by harrowing choices over what to do about them.

The movie is based on a 2017 Los Angeles Times article by Frank Shyong. After the screening, Shyong sat with award-winning journalist Josie Huang of LAist to talk about the article he wrote and issues of mental health, cultural identity and family dynamics.

The event was co-funded with AAJA-LA by the California Endowment and the California Community Foundation.
