Student journalists meet with professionals during Randy Hagihara Coaching Day

Student journalists got a rare experience during the 3rd annual Randy Hagihara Coaching Day — a one-on-one mentoring session with professionals in the fields they are interested in.

Each student met with two professional journalists for a no-bar hold conversation about the journalism industry, what they should do next and how to get a job.

Asian American Journalist Association-Los Angeles board member Julie Patel-Liss and Cindy Chang worked tirelessly to match two mentors for each mentee.

The event honors the late great Randy Hagihara, who was a dedicated AAJA-LA member and a former L.A. Times editor and recruiter. Hagihara left an indelible mark on many chapter member as their mentor.

After the sessions, mentors and mentees took part in a panel discussion from industry experts on the future of journalism in an AI world.

The event took place at Cal State LA and was generously sponsored by AAJA-LA, Latino Journalists of California-CCNMA and Cal State LA Journalism.
