Trivia Bowl 2025 raises thousands for AAJA-LA, celebrates partners

Annual event funds scholarships, grants, internships and more for AAPI journalists in SoCal

More than 350 people showed their support for the Asian American Journalist Association-Los Angeles by attending the annual Trivia Bowl “fun”raiser.

Big thank you to event sponsor East West Bank for their support. Special thank you to Jarl and Pamela Mohn for their annual donation that allows student journalists from area colleges to attend. Thanks to platinum sponsors ABC7 and the Los Angeles Times for their continued support over the years.

This year’s hospitality sponsors treated guests and volunteers to tasty tacos, tea, desserts and refreshments. Thank you Wahoos Fish Taco, 7 Leaves Cafe, Reyes Coca-Cola, Dulce Cafe and Phoenix Bakery.

While the Los Angeles Dodgers were across town securing their place in the World Series, in Little Tokyo, AAJA-LA journalism partners and community members were battling it out to find out who knows it all.

The early rounds had teams scoring pretty close together. By round four, the gap widen for some clear frontrunners. In the end, after a “La La Land”/”Moonlight” moment, we had the winner of the Rice Cup.

Japanese American Bar Association won with 59 points. The Los Angeles Times was right behind then with 58 points.

The winner of the Grasshopper Cup was Cal State Long Beach for the fourth year in a row.

And the IW Group went home with the Spirit Award with their coordinated “K-Pop Demon Hunters” costumes.

Trivia Bowl raised thousands of dollars thanks to all the sponsors. The money will go toward AAJA-LA programs that support and connect AAPI journalists.

AAJA-LA runs scholarships and internships that get student journalists into Southern California newsrooms and connect them with mentors. Our annual grants and fellowships support AAJA-LA members in their reporting on the AAPI community. The funds also allow AAJA-LA to organize events like panel discussions, hands-on training and mixers to connect members to each other and experts in their field.

Trivia Bowl is an annual event to bring Southern California journalists and community partners together for a night of fun competition and community. While the 2025 Trivia Bowl is over, there are a few move events ahead in 2025. And next year, Trivia Bowl will be back!
